Kevin C.M. Benson

Col (Ret.) Dr. Kevin C.M. Benson retired from the US Army on 1 July 2007 completing 30 years of active duty. Dr. Benson is a 1977 graduate of the United States Military Academy. Dr. Benson attended the Armor Officer Basic Course, U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the School of Advanced Military Studies. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology Security Studies Program as a War College Fellow in 2001. He currently teaches at the University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies. He is a doctor of philosophy in history from the University of Kansas. He was a Senator Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics Summer Fellow in 2011.
He served at the platoon through Joint Force level in peace, operations other than war, and war. Dr. Benson commanded the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. He served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, C5 (Plans), Combined Forces Land Component Command and Third US Army from June 2002 to July 2003 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM/Operation COBRA II and Operation ECLIPSE II. Dr. Benson’s final posting in the Army was the Director, School of Advanced Military Studies, SAMS. He served in Baghdad as a member of the J5, US Forces-Iraq from October 2010 to January 2011, at the request of the commanding general.
His personal awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina), Iraq Campaign Medal, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and the United Nations Medal.
