About The Author

Dr. James D. Kiras is an Associate Professor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies at Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He directs the School’s course on Irregular Warfare and is an Associate Fellow of the Joint Special Operations University, Tampa, Florida. In addition, Dr. Kiras lectures extensively on topics related to irregular warfare, including special operations, unconventional warfare, and terrorism. This article is based on his book, Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism (Routledge, 2006), and the views contained within this article do not represent those of the United States government, the Department of Defense, or the United States Air Force.
