First things first - We are definitely not your typical global affairs publication. Actually, we're something quite different than what you're probably used to . . . and, no doubt that's a good thing. IJ intends to push the limits and encourage 'crossing the line' when it comes to some of the most important topics in global affairs. Tired of the academic rigidness of most journals? Tired of the un-sourced, polemic opinion editorials in your newspapers? We're tired too and at IJ, we expect our writers to do better things with their ideas. Have a quick read about the journalzine and if you're interested, and have an idea, hit us with it. But, if you're not the writing-type, no problem. Simply join IJ for free and enjoy the articles, blogs, networking, and everything else that makes up the site.
The IJ Idea
When it comes to global affairs, IJ knows that no one is more motivated, creative, and innovative than young professionals and graduates. Yet, an IJ writer does not have to be an academic to submit to our publication. . . we're open to anyone and everyone interested in global affairs. We know that 'global affairs' is a bit of a broad theme but we did that on purpose. We want you to have the opportunity to write on anything from conflict, humanitarianism, political economy, post-conflict issues, and development, to music, art, politics, law, technology, insurgency, terrorism . . . and everything else in between. Basically, IJ is offering up a very cool platform to put forward your thoughts, opinions and research. What exactly are we looking for? We want you to be ambitious with your opinions using out-of-the-box, cutting-edge, witty, provocative thinking, all based on solid and sourced research and delivered in a casual way, so that you will gain the widest readership possible.
Our plans
What are we trying to do? IJ plans on changing the way that not only academics, professional peers, and others in your audience perceive your work but also how you, the student or the young professional, perceive your own knowledge, research, and opinions on global affairs. Basically, IJ intends to be an avant-garde and forward-thinking young professionals and graduate journalzine. What's more, IJ is not only aiming to address the academic world, but also the world of your readership, be they your global leaders or our laymen. If you want to build a wide readership, speak the people's language. The fancier and smarter you try to write and sound, the less the people are going to understand your point. IJ might be 'academic' in nature but our delivery is casual.
What makes IJ a progressive journalzine? Well, the papers that we decide to publish dare to question whether existing policies are working, and how they could be more effective. Question everything and accept nothing at face value. We want you to think beyond the limits of the classroom or your office, introduce your innovative ideas, and use those analytical, intellectual, and practical skills so you can offer researched-based opinions and essays on global affairs.
What makes IJ's community of members different from other sites? Simple answer - we are not just another faceless 'academic' publication, message board, or forum. If writing isn't an interest, we are also here to be your global networking village. We know that it is becoming easier and easier to interact with people within seconds – people who once seemed worlds away just a few years ago. So, we now offer you the ability to network with members from around the world – to share your ideas and opinions with others by using special features we offer for free, such as IJ private messaging or IJ blogs. The coolest feature is Search & Connect (S&C). S&C allows you to make contact, ask for help on papers, work presentations, and possible sources, as well co-author papers with members or to just make new contacts to chit chat about global issues.
This is what IJ is all about: a cool, casual and new type of venue to publish either opinion-analyses or research essays in a peer-reviewed publication, all the while being able to connect and share with others around the world. After all, it is you - the young professionals and students who are shaping, and will continue to shape, the world's future. Want to be heard? Then you need to be loud - and IJ is here to help!
If you wish to be considered for publication, simply sign up to become a member and closely follow the submission guidelines. Please Note the following points:
- Please follow submission guidelines very closely. This is critical - referees will not review papers that have not conformed to IJ’s guidelines. Research essays are peer-reviewed; opinion-analyses are professionally edited.
- Published pieces will be available for all members to read or use as sources. We will also contain a backlog of issues, which will be free to all members. The hope is that writers’ past work will help others in their future research.
- Any IJ member may download articles from our website but no one may post/upload/copy-paste, etc, articles from IJ to any other website without the explicit consent of IJ.
- While the site is open and free to everyone, writing is generally intended for young professionals and graduates. But, we're open-minded. So, if you're not a young professional or grad student, give it a shot anyway. A note to undergraduates - know that the selection process will be extremely competitive, with a rigorous peer review process, with only the best pieces being published. Use S&C to seek advice or fire off an email to us - we're here to help.
- "Young professionals" also include those who have already obtained a PhD but but but . . . for no longer than three years.
- Age limit for young professionals in the workforce is 40; there is no age limit on current students or those holding a PhD for no longer than three years.
